History[]
Scott completed the piece on May 25, 2017. He uploaded it to his DeviantART page the same day and his Facebook page the following day. It was done as an entry in a contest on DeviantART.
Subject and title[]
This is an entry in a "mermaid" contest at the Disney-Club at DeviantART. The purpose of the contest was to draw fan art of a Disney mermaid. Following is the description Scott listed on the artwork's DeviantART page:
I was torn between Ariel (Little Mermaid) and Syrena (Pirates of the Caribbean). Even though Ariel is one of my favorite Princesses (yes, I'm a grown man and I just admitted that), I couldn't pass up Syrena. The actress who plays her is just too friggin' hot. So here is my cartoony depiction of the scene in which the "bad guys" attempt to capture a mermaid at Whitecap Bay.
I worked on it over the course of a few days. I started with a pencil sketch of the overall composition. Then I went ahead and sketched out the characters, boat, net, and lighthouse. I went over the line work with ink and scanned everything into my computer. The digital coloring came next, and I pieced the images together and added some of the extra effects (light, water, etc). This is usually how my process works. Hours later, I was very pleased with the outcome.
So, yeah. This is essentially mixed media Disney fan art of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Syrena is the mermaid and the guys in the boat are (left to right) Scrum, Cabin Boy, Zombie Quartermaster, and Purser.
Media[]
Scott started out with pencil drawings, then inked the final line work. He then scanned the drawings to work on them digitally in Paint Shop Pro.
